To reflect those changes... I will be closing down the blogspot accounts. These posts will remain, but I will be blogging exclusively on Wordpress from this point forward. When it is up and running I will leave a link here for those of you who are still with me.
Thanks for the follow and the patience in the course of this past year and a half.
Enjoy your own art works! sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-49729678071630911352016-09-25T23:19:00.001-04:002016-09-25T23:19:44.526-04:00New Works: the Hand CrampsI have embarked on a new artistic adventure. It's taken me years to wrap my head around the fact that the old plan is never going to happen the way I want it too. So while I've angrily dug in, "been a grown up" and worked diligently in a "regular job" with "real work" that is "practical" and gotten just about as far as I have ever done on a "pipe dream", I've been unable to see around the obstacle. I've just seen the obstacle.

I don't know why or how, but a few weeks ago I saw a way around. A clearer path to self employment in a field of my chosing and following my passion. I've learned where I do and don't belong in the world. And just when I was afraid that I was never going to be able to retain my artistic identity with paper and pen while dabbling in digital art BOOM! There is the answer.

The digital art has made me comfortable with computers, web based graphics programs, the wide world of digital publishing and generally being good training to make sure that the work I want to do gets done and gets into the hands of people who will enjoy it. The trend that I thought was a fad is a legit niche market with some staying power that will always work itself back into plan A if the market decides that plan A had good product and enjoys a renaissance.

Here is a sample of what I am working on. These are test pages for a coloring book that I am compiling drawings for. I get about 2-3 done per day. The coloring takes ALL DAY though since I am bereft of my two favorite pencil brands. They are somewhere in storage. I have many drawings now but not all of them fit the two themes that I am starting with.

I am trying to decide on format, covers, the intro piece and trying to get images scanned so that they will upload to the publisher. Have to decide on paper style and all sorts of stuff like that. I have set a deadline and it is fast approaching.

This is a preliminary mock up of one of my designs that will become a coloring book.

Getting back to basics. That has been the theme of recovery from heart disease. Did I not mention that before? Part of the lack of post was definitely health related. But also it has been a profound lack of art production.

I've been upset about being thwarted in several plans in the past. And it took me getting busy and overworked to realize that the real limit to my success was imagination. I was so set on on way of doing things that I couldn't see a way around the roadblocks.

And honestly, 6 years ago when I started seeing all the Zentagles exploding in the craft markets I thought it was a fad. It went from fad to movement in creating the adult coloring book market. Who knew? If I think about it though, I have to admit that it makes a lot of sense. Any number of customers would drag their friends into a store hoping to make a new fan of rubber stamping only to be told "I'm not artistic." And some people really are not artistic enough to do more than color. Not judgement and no accusations need to be thrown around. That is just the way that it is. The lament of the non artistic over being better at math and not so good with drawing is just what the adult coloring market soothes.

Everyone needs art whether or not they can draw themselves. As is said, Art washes away from the Soul the dirt of everyday life. Everyone needs a soul washing now and again and a trip to church on Sunday isn't always enough. Attending church can be a source of stress and discontent in itself which counteracts the inherent benefits. And sometimes, you need that soul washing in the middle of the day in the midst of a hectic work week and you can't wait for the church setting to get the soul refreshing benefits of art. Adult coloring books provide the immediate effect of being able to get negativity off of you when you find yourself surrounded by the ugliness of of a fractured and dysfunctional world.

Cleaning the soul is important. If coloring books will do it then that is where I am going to put myself to help. I've not done anything artistic in a few years other than on digital formats and I have to say this. While the brain has gotten quite a work out and I have had quite a satisfying adventure in photography and digital composition, it is not quite the same as drawing with a pencil on paper. The whole body is involved in drawing. The whole body is involved in coloring too. And that is what helps to get the energy moving in a positive direction. In the last two weeks my health has improved more significantly than in the last 3 months.

Now to do something with what I have learned and employ my inherent skill set to be the most beneficial!
I've been trying to figure out how all of the new things I've been learning would translate into finished projects. And I think I have the solution. So there should be more work to see in the next few weeks and a link to a book you can buy.

That's right. I am a few weeks away from selling my own book of art.

Stay tuned. sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-18328165556771445282016-08-20T13:59:00.000-04:002016-08-20T13:59:15.524-04:00RecoverySlowly coming back from a cardiac event following nearly two years of non stop working for the man. Loving PicMonkey as always and working with that app to create new things. Lots of research and food things happening. Photography has been big this Summer as well as the German Foods.

Sounds like there is a lot going on. But it is mostly trying to come back from a near stroke. Like a stroke but without the brain damaging after effects. I am taking up cheese making (Quark, German farmers cheese) and bread making. So the art is going to be sparse for a bit longer. I am also trying to get my fine motor skills back up to par.

In the mean time this is what I work on when I have to sit down for a bit.
I wrote a post about the folk art styles I've been researching on my other blog. I'm kinda all over the place right now trying to figure out what I want to focus on and what to purge from storage. It's gonna be a long Summer.
I am looking forward to making money again so that I can buy some of the font bundles. There are amazing things here for font geeks & foundry freaks. More than fonts, there are digital packs for a huge variety of illustrative elements. I just whipped this up with today's free download.

Every Monday the Market offers 6 free downloads. Last week I hit the jack pot 5 out of 6 offers pertained to my interest. Today's yield gave me three things in my style. Restraint is difficult to achieve with these guys. There are literally thousands of graphic designers making things to make it easier for you to make things.

And lots of information.

I linked to the blog page for Creative Market because I have been reading the backlog of articles all week. The information is astounding. And I can not wait to get started on my new ventures. Though productivity is going to be an issue as I keep drooling over all of the goodies that these designers have to offer.

It's been a hard two years for the art work. I realized this a while back. As with all things though, sometimes you have to step back and find your direction again. I can get crazy making things across a very wide spectrum of mediums. Reigning that in and figuring out what exactly I am going to do with all of the skills I have and which direction is the most fulfilling requires time. And I guess that is what I have been doing for the last two years that the art production has been low.

It will still be a while before I know how and in which direction to progress. In the meantime I am indulging my love of typeface and enjoying the ease with which Windows lets me install those fonts. And as always, PicMonkey is right there making life so much easier.

Long live Pic Monkey and Creative Market!

I scheduled those diorama posts so be spread out over a week. I didn't realize that blogger decided to publish them all at once. It does that sometimes and it is really annoying. I will be working on more photos over the coming weeks.

Also working on food photography again.

A few changes in life being made currently and I am spread a little thinner than I like. But we will get back to the meat and potatoes of art and life in short order.sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-7026924658173774082016-04-01T10:00:00.000-04:002016-04-01T10:00:06.921-04:00Little Church Again

When we were kids we had gotten a bunch of Fisher Price play sets. When I got the Castle for Christmas my sister got the Village.

The village set opened up to reveal the interiors of each shop on the street sides. The halves could be configured so that they faced each other to create the effect of a real street. The fire station sat at one end of the set and a theater/restaurant stood at another. Back in 1976 those sets had retained a lot of the character of decorating themes that were popular with the parents. The theater retained Victorian charms. It always fascinated me, not enough to want to be a theater major but enough to be enamored of this theater in Grand Rapids the second that I saw it.

It also is the perfect venue for this filter effect. I just needed to change the wording on the marquee to reflect something closer to the toy than the brick and mortar building.

Imitating Tilt-shift photography, this filter lets you turn just about anything into a setting inside a diorama. The effect looks like the opening in Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. I'm not sure what practical application there is in turning your town into a toy but it is fun to do.
This is a sample of what I worked on today.

This photo was taken a couple of years ago from the second floor of our city library. The park on the east shore of Boardman Lake is very real and very lush. Here... it looks like bits of plastic trees on a flocked cardboard lawn.

The water in this picture of the West Bay marina looks as phony as I could hope. The yacht in focus looks like a borrowed battleship. I think I might have too much effect in this one since the marina itself has become so blurry. But it still looks like a diorama.

This photo, taken from Wayne Hill, started out blurry and diffused because the day was so hazy. The Park Place Hotel stands out here with the same quality as the Mr. Roger's opening. However, I think there is too much scenery to make this work the right way.

The goal in tilt-shift photography is too start out above, but not on top of, your subject. A 45 degree angle is preferred. But that isn't always going to be possible. So long as you are above the subject, you should be able to get a good shot that is easy enough to manipulate. Because you are boosting blurs and colors, you want to make sure that you also have a crisp shot, clear colors and haven't added any other effects before you apply this one. I think this would have better if it had not been such a hazy day.

Since I am not an expert, I am not certain what I did wrong with this one. The effect seems flat and the little out building that is in focus doesn't quite have the toy quality that I was going for.
This one is of my dad's birthplace. To me it still seems too lifelike and real to be the diorama that I was looking for. Even in the next one, the effect seems diminished compared to what I was looking for. But then, I wasn't above my subject either.

This is a picture of down town Grand Rapids from my Urban Hike a few years ago. The hills that Grand Rapids sits on gives enough variations in height to make this work better than it otherwise might have.
Not too bad for a learning experience eh?sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-60541209530517758422016-01-26T13:42:00.001-05:002016-01-26T13:42:40.626-05:00Learning and Gathering PhaseWhen the artwork is not being produced there is much absorption of information. Currently going over the old typography books and falling in love with fonts all over again. Which is probably obvious from the exemplars I've posted. I am also trying to dig into the brain pan and find all the places that I have hidden some great informational gems. I have to be honest and tell you that this political campaign season has really piqued my interest and is taking up much of my time.

So while things swirl in a chaotic cloud in my head, I leave you with a few bits to absorb on your own. When the dust settles we will see what has been left.

First: Print Magazine's online source has a variety of great visuals and some in depth articles. This one featuring Czech poster design was fascinating.

The magazine covers all things related to design, color history and meaning, typographers and foundries, theory and application.

Print will also clue you in on some great things that you may not have otherwise discovered in terms of small imprints and magazines from around the world.

In other places around the web, art seems to abound. I found a drawing on pintrest and followed the story here. It takes a while to navigate this blog. But Tommy Kane has an interesting take on life and art in his surroundings.

And of course there is the work that keeps the bills paid. Winter is not really cooperating with the light for photography when I am home so I am also focusing on the baking of recipes and translating of said recipes. It looks like the busy season will commence for us in the middle of the grey bleak midwinter. Oh well... I guess that is how life goes.sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-45361701657013004032015-12-15T15:13:00.002-05:002015-12-15T15:13:38.147-05:00Photography Practice

Just a small collection of the food I've photographed from my own kitchen. I am looking at the end of the year and wondering, after 51 posts to www.amgerman.wordpress.com if this is something that I enjoy enough to keep doing. Retrospection can be such a pain.

I love this. I have always loved food. And I have always loved writing. Now that I am getting better at the photography aspect I am more comfortable with this. Am I comfortable with calling myself a food photographer? Not just yet. Am I comfortable with the concept of an identity change away from visual arts (canvas and the like)? No.

I want to see myself as an artist. I miss getting my hands dirty and playing in paint. But I also have to acknowledge that I may never have the ability to live on my own and have the space to work with. I can make my tiny kitchen work to crank out this stuff. But I need a little more room for the art that I do in paint and canvas. I also need to not feel like I am always in the way when I work.

Still so much to consider. But there is always the art of creative cooking!

The only sunny days which would have given me the perfect light for the dramatic food shoots have been my work days. And the sun dashes behind shelves of clouds the second I get in my car. No point in racing home for a photo shoot. What cop would believe that was why I was speeding home?
You change your blog template and watch stupid banal movies on Netflix after you've binged on Jessica Jones.

So I think that I am settled with this look. It is fresher, doesn't take a lot of energy away from the posts and leaves off the weight that the darker background had.
As for banal and stupid movies on Netflix.... I don't know why I am still watching this drivel.
A politically correct choice of color?
No secret, I hate pastels. And I am a little bit biased against the colors because I so strongly dislike pastels. I don't know why we can't have more jewel tones. Last year's marsala was a nice deep color at once serene and bold. And so perfect to go with jewel tones as a balance.

Now these colors, the shade of a tepid sunset. I can't wait to see what next year's color will be.sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-50030485160919717862015-11-22T21:36:00.000-05:002015-11-22T21:36:02.096-05:00Germany in Nuts

Up close and personal this looks like a mountain of pumpkin seeds. In reality it is just a small handful in the bottom of a glass dish.

Reality is a bit tweaked though. I almost feel as if I was able to be standing in the bowl taking the shot as well as viewing the shot. Sometimes the macros turn out and sometimes they don't. I haven't yet figured out the magic to the art of macro photography. But I think that part of the key is to not think TOO hard what you are doing.sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-43649840979402805612015-08-29T00:11:00.001-04:002015-08-29T00:11:14.053-04:00Font ShowcaseI love this movie. It is actually my favorite Hugh Jackman movie. And personally, I think Karl's poor bewildered Friar Fraidypants totally makes the movie. Without his sense of fear, self preservation and surprise this would be just a bunch of great costumes, graphics and melodramatic posturing. Karl brings the reality.
It isn't finished but I put it in a frame anyway. As long as it is tucked away I will never finish it. And I need it safe while it is out. So here we go... framed and sitting on the little bookshelf by my bed waiting for me to figure out how to work the issues.

Part of me really likes this the way it is and doesn't want to futz with it too much. In person the pillars really glow and the tile is starting to shine a bit. The issue I have is that the face isn't complete on the fountain head so it doesn't really look like a lion to me. Also... the background doesn't recede enough for my liking. I'll figure it out.

And while I am figuring out the painting. I will figure out what kind of words I will add to it. I almost think that is half the problem. After all it was the title page for an article in a travel magazine and the blank spot is where the title went. Perhaps that will be a gouche situation. Maybe in gold or an aged bronze.sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6257268242034399968.post-81006453712423091582015-07-09T21:28:00.001-04:002015-07-09T21:28:39.675-04:00A little digital respite

Playing with some digital art since it travels well and is easy to pack up when I only have a few minutes.

Last Summer was full of adventure. I gotta do it though. I can't open the hotel and keep up with the hobbies. I will be back when we are up and running and I've had a couple of days to recover from the physical challenge of doing so. We are close. We are really close.

Close only counts in horse shoes.sherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04664231178384208560noreply@blogger.com0
